Waalhaven footbridge fitted with ‘funicular’ for the disabled, Nijmegen (NL)

At the request of the new Nijmegen city council, Ney & Partners adapted its earlier design of the pedestrian bridge over the Waalhaven to make it accessible to the disabled. The bridge is part of the route along the River Waal and should ensure that pedestrians can access the city centre along this road. A stair platform lift moves along two rails between the two stair halves, a technique similar to a funicular cable-car. The platform bridges a height of 5 m over a length of 15 m. The platform is accessible for wheelchairs, mobility scooters or prams but is deliberately too short for scooters.
