20.046 | Waalhaven bridge
-
The new footbridge across the entrance of the Waalhaven harbour will become part of a pedestrian connection between the city centre and the Waalfront Development Zone. The Waalhaven bridge stands high on its legs, in order not to obstruct shipping traffic from the harbour, even at the highest water levels. Like a water strider, the bridge floats above the surface of the water, and the stairs hoover above the ground. The bridge’s materials are simple, durable and suited to the context of the site: painted steel, stainless Duplex steel, and Ultrahigh performance concrete. A stair platform lift has been added to make it accessible to the disabled. This platform is accessible for wheelchairs, mobility scooters or prams but is deliberately too short for scooters.
