Ney & Partners wins design competition for the Railway Bridge Norderelbe, Hamburg (DE)

The Elbe Bridges have shaped the identity of Hamburg for almost a century. They represent the city’s port and industrial heritage and form the iconic gateway to the Elbe metropolis. Ney & Partners, together with panta ingenieure, proposed the winning design of three new arch bridges that strengthen the historic ensemble while preparing it for the future. As part of the extension of the Hamburg U-Bahn U4, the structures complement the existing bridges and expand long-term capacity.

The new bridges reference the formal language of the historic bridges. Slender steel arches, vertical flat-bar hangers, and cross-shaped wind bracing create a harmonious dialogue with the existing structures, integrating seamlessly into the ensemble and translate its formal vocabulary into a contemporary structural expression.

The concept connects history with the future of mobility. Rail operations remain fully functional on two bridges throughout construction. Designed for a lifespan of over 100 years, the scheme follows sustainable principles and allows flexibility for future expansion. New pedestrian and cycling routes beneath and around the bridges link neighborhoods, open views toward the Elbe, and enhance the public realm. Transparency and a carefully designed lighting strategy transform the former transit zone into a vibrant urban space. The ensemble is not merely upgraded – it is redefined as a renewed gateway to the city.
