24.055 | Railway bridge Norderelbe Hamburg
-
The Norderelbe bridge ensemble, consisting of the historic railway overpasses from 1926, the Freihafenelbbrücke (1926), and the S-Bahn bridge (1978), forms a prominent gateway to Hamburg, reflecting the city’s harbor and industrial heritage.
Our award-winning design was developed for the renewal of the bridges, which had reached the end of their lifespan. With the addition of the U4 line and new rail crossings, the ensemble will also become denser. Our design aims to offer new ways to experience the individual structures while creating opportunities for innovative design. Public foot and cycling paths beneath the bridges create new visual connections, enhance spatial quality, and improve functional links between city districts.
