Ney & Partners in winning team for first design proposal Extension S.M.A.K., Ghent (BE)
-
The S.M.A.K. (Stedelijk Museum Actuele Kunst) has long been in need of more space to permanently display works from its own collection. Through the procedure of the Open Call of the Flemish Government Architect, the winning team noAarchitects, David Kohn Architects with Asli Çiçek was announced. The design proposal includes a second museum building, for the permanent collection. The jury appreciated the winning design team’s principle of ‘circular building’. They committed to working as much as possible with the existing buildings and materials.
Ney & Partners will be responsible for the complete stability study. Specifically, through a thorough review, the potential of the existing structures will be maximized. Additionally, with a few limited localized interventions, we will expand the usability of the existing structures. Finally, in the design of the new structure, the environmental impact will be minimized by making the correct choice of materials and optimizing material usage. The design team, together with the S.M.A.K. and sogent, will refine the competition design and the incorporation in the Citadel Park in the coming months before coming up with a final design.
