Two of three bridges in Hoorn are nearing completion. Hoorn (NL)

The first two bridges in Hoorn connecting the historic Westfriese Omringdijk with the newly built city beach are nearing completion. The  opening of the infrastructure is foreseen the 15th of May. The concrete deck and walls of the bridges have been cast with a wooden panel pattern, which blends them into the landscape. The pedestrian bridge has a boardwalk path of recycled plastic in between green borders. Natural vegetation will run onto the bridge from the city beach side. The tilted walls create an ‘inverse dyke’, a protective passage between the concrete walls. The gap between the structure and historical dyke is bridged with a steel mesh element, emphasizing the transition from old to new.

A third bridge for cyclists is being constructed further south along the dyke, where the concrete shell has already been cast. The three bridges are designed as a family with small variations in size depending on their function. Ney & Partners is responsible for the design and calculation of the three bridges. This is a collaboration with Alliantie Markermeerdijken and the Municipality of Hoorn. Copyright image: Ney & Partners
