Transformation ‘R4 West Oost’ first symbolic dig in the earth, Ghent (BE)

Recently the DBFM-agreement for ‘R4 West Oost’ was granted by the Flemish Government to the consortium BRAVO4 (BESIX, Epicofund, I4B-The Belgian Infrastructure Fund, RID PPP (Rebel, abrdn) STADSBADER NV). The connection between Ghent and the Ghent Port Area will be completely transformed in the coming years with the project ‘ Ombouw R4 West Oost’. Ramps and exits for motorised traffic will be totally reorganised via key intersections. New bridges, tunnels and subways will allow local traffic to pass under or over the R4. This will make traffic travel smoother and reduce the risk of dangerous situations between road users. This will also make the liveability and connection between residential areas on both sides of the R4 a lot safer. Traffic intersections are designed to be as compact as possible, creating more high-quality greenery, and providing more air and light for all users and residents.

Ney & Partners and Tractebel Engineering are involved in this project as design engineering consultants. Ney & Partners in particular are involved in this project as design engineering consultants responsible for the architectural design, of the road bridges, road tunnels, bicycle bridges and tunnels, 1 railway bridge and railway tunnels, eco tunnels, noise barriers, retaining walls, embankments, and technical buildings. The overall landscape plan is designed by Omgeving landscape architecture. The consortium will start preparatory works and some accelerated interventions this month. In August 2025, it will start the larger works on the 22 intersection points on and along the R4. The total conversion will be completed in early 2031.
