Timber foot and bicycle bridge official opened, Tervuren (BE)

Today the bridge crossing the ‘Vierarmenkruispunt’ was officially openend. Ney & Partners was responsible for the design and engineering of the bridge. This innovative design, using a bio-sourced material to reduce environmental impact, has demonstrated its suitability for long spans without intermediate supports, making it a promising solution for future pedestrian bridge projects. The timber box girder is constructed of slender LVL plates reinforced with transverse fins of the same material in a fixed 3 m rhythm. Walls and roof are ‘held in shape’ with a series of porches also made of cut-out LVL sheets with the same rhythm. LVL was chosen for this project not only for aesthetic reasons, but also to take advantage of its structural properties, which were fully integrated into the structural design.
