Restoration begins on protected heritage tribune of Royal Racing Club Brussels

The Royal Hockey Club of Brussels, founded in 1891 and renowned for hosting the first international football match between Belgium and France, is the proud owner of a unique tribune, one of the club’s most iconic features. Built in 1908 and classified as protected heritage since 2009, the tribune had become inaccessible over time due to stability concerns, rendering it unsafe for spectators. After Ney & Partners carefully investigated the causes behind the stability and durability issues and designed the restoration works accordingly, construction work can now begin. The concrete structure will be preserved in its entirety, and the timber roof will be rebuilt in its original topology, recreating the missing diaphragm link between the concrete frames. To ensure longevity, after local concrete repairs in critical zones, the structure will be protected through hidden cathodic protection. Barbara Van Der Wee Architects is the responsible architect. Once restored, the tribune will be able to accommodate up to 1,000 sports fans.
