23.009 | Foot and bicycle bridge ‘Große Weserbrücke’
-
The new Weser crossing for cyclists and pedestrians is located in one the prominent location in Bremen. As an extension of the old fortifications, opposite the old town and at an important inner-city traffic junction, the crossing has a symbolic character as a starting point for the transformation for the mobility in the city of Bremen. The curved shape of the former “Contre-Scarpe” the old fortification, but also its conical shape inspired our bridge design. The curved geometry in plan view at the level of the main pylon makes it possible to create a 150 m² space for lingering pedestrians and cyclists. The materials of the bridge such as the concrete finishing of the piers and the finishing of the abutments in local sandstone refer to those of the old city. Other details such as the ropes and masts (pylons) and the filigree, as well as the colours white and light grey connect to the city’s maritime past.
