The Sternbrücke railway overpass in Hamburg, used by around 900 trains daily, has reached the end of its 100-year service life. The steel from 1926 is fatigued, non-weldable, and no longer meets current standards, making renovation unfeasible. Deutsche Bahn, in coordination with the City of Hamburg, has decided to replace the bridge with a 108 m tied-arch design with inward-leaning arches and no road-level supports.
