In the past the Ring around Brussels formed an troublesome barrier. The Flemish Government wanted to reconnect the areas inside and outside the Ring with projects such as De Priorij or the Vierarmen bicycle bridge. As such, fragmented nature areas and residential areas were reconnected. Recreational attraction poles such as the Sonian Forest became more accessible. This was one of the main objectives of the ‘Working on the Ring Road’ R0 around Brussels. One of the designs is a timber bicycle and pedestrian bridge with a single span of 67.5 m. The choice for timber in this wooded environment is obvious. However, the timber is not only provided as a cladding or finishing material, but also for the entire supporting structure.
