Pedestrian bridge ‘Jubiläumsbrücke’ is open to the public, Ratingen (DE)

On 4th September, the bridge marking the 750th anniversary of the city of Ratingen was officially opened to the public. The ‘Jubiläumsbrücke’, a new steel structure located in the heart of the historic town centre, replaces a deteriorated wooden bridge. It is conceived as an urban landmark where past, present and future meet. The bridge integrates into its historic surroundings in a respectful way. Its distinctive balustrade, developed in collaboration with Cologne-based artist Thomas Heinz, creates a dynamic play of light and shadow, positive and negative, solid and void.

Ney & Partners designed the pedestrian bridge with the future in mind: it features a wider 2.5-m walkway, a level, non-slip surface for improved accessibility, increased headroom for pedestrians walking underneath the bridge, and is vandal-resistant. This project for the Stadt Ratingen was planned together with licht raum stadt planung for the lighting design and executed by Schmees & Lühn Holz- und Stahlingenieurbau.
