Opening of the Ecorecreaduct and Bike Tunnel ‘The Priory’ in Hoeilaart (BE)

A few weeks ago, a group of schoolchildren officially inaugurated the new bike tunnel and the ecorecreaduct near Groenendaal station. This project is part of the Flemish Government’s initiative, ‘Werken aan De Ring’, aimed at reconnecting areas inside and outside the Brussels Ring Road (R0) to facilitate soft mobility. Thanks to this development, pedestrians and cyclists now benefit from dedicated, safe paths stretching from Groenendaal station, crossing the Ring Road, all the way to the Forest Museum. This improved connection enhances multimodal access, offering a secure and enjoyable route for non-motorized users. Additionally, the planned wildlife passage allows local flora and fauna, such as bats, beetles, and amphibians, to expand their habitats. The ecorecreaduct itself is an integral bridge constructed with weatherproof steel beams supporting a concrete deck that spans 55 m. The abutments are built from reinforced concrete, while wooden panels are used to shield noise and light coming from the R0, ensuring the structure blends naturally into its surroundings.

Ney & Partners oversaw the design of the ecorecreaduct and the bike tunnel, as well as the study of the ecorecreaduct. This is a collaboration with SBE, Omgeving, D+A, Hesselteer and Mint. Copyright photo: Ney & Partners
