Footbridge successfully installed in the Quartier Bleu district, Hasselt (BE)

After a two-day journey along the River Scheldt and the Albert Canal, the new pedestrian and bicycle bridge has arrived in the Quartier Bleu district in Hasselt and has been successfully installed. The 56-metre-long steel bridge, built by C-Metal, part of the Cordeel Group, will serve as an important connection between the two banks of this vibrant neighbourhood in transition. The new bridge is more than just a practical crossing; it is a place where different users come together, each within their own dedicated zone. In the pedestrian zone, people can sit and enjoy views of the Bleu Quartier district and the city skyline from a new perspective. A separate cycling zone allows cyclists to cross the canal safely and comfortably, while a third zone will feature planted areas (substrate, plants, shrubs, and small trees on the widened sections).

The structure and underside of the footbridge can be compared to a waffle pattern, formed by a complex of transverse and longitudinal stiffeners. The steel stiffeners, spaced about 2 m apart, reinforce and follow the shape of the double-curved deck, which has a thickness of 20 mm. Four stay cables positioned at the ends of the footbridge enable the prestressing of the central span, which reduces bending moments and thus ensures the slenderness of the bridge deck.

The bridge is expected to be in use in the fall of this year after the finishing works are done. Habitants of the city of Hasselt are invited to come up with a name for this new bridge.
