Construction of ‘Airport tramway line’ has started, Brussels (BE)

Construction works have officially begun on the major ‘Luchthaventram’ project, an intermodal public transport project carried out by the consortium Tractebel – Ney & Partners – Bas Smets on behalf of De Werkvennootschap (Flemish authorities). The construction site was officially inaugurated by the Flemish Minister of Mobility and Public Works on Monday, March 30^th 2026, in the presence of the CEO of Brussels Airport. The project, jointly funded by the Flemish Region and the Brussels-Capital Region, aims to provide a fast and efficient connection between the NATO headquarters and Brussels Airport, extending the tram line with key stops at the major business parks in Machelen and Zaventem. Ney & Partners is in charge of the architectural and structural design of a bike tunnel, a cycling bridge, three combined tram and cycling bridges, a tram tunnel and the stations. The new tram line is expected to be operational by 2031.
