Construction of ‘Airport tramway line’ has started, Brussels (BE)

Construction works have officially begun on the major ‘Luchthaventram’ project, an intermodal public transport project carried out by the consortium Tractebel – Ney & Partners – Bas Smets on behalf of De Werkvennootschap (Flemish authorities). The construction site was officially inaugurated by the Flemish Minister of Mobility and Public Works on Monday, March 30th 2026, in the presence of the CEO of Brussels Airport. The project, jointly funded by the Flemish Region and the Brussels-Capital Region, aims to provide a fast and efficient connection between the NATO headquarters and Brussels Airport, extending the tram line with key stops at the major business parks in Machelen and Zaventem. Ney & Partners is in charge of the architectural and structural design of a bike tunnel, a cycling bridge, three combined tram and cycling bridges, a tram tunnel and the stations. The new tram line is expected to be operational by 2031.
