Ney & Partners part of winning consortium for sustainable 23-storey building, Malmö (SE)
-
We are pleased to announce that Ney & Partners is part of the consortium that has won the competition for the design of Varvstornen, a 23-story building in the vibrant neighbourhood of Varvsstaden in central Malmö, Sweden. As our first project in Sweden, the tower will be built in a historic area, respecting its industrial character while making it future-proof.
Ambitious sustainability goals guided the design process from the outset. Working closely with the design team, Ney & Partners developed a hybrid structural concept combining a concrete core with ribbed timber floors made of glulam ribs and CLT panels. The concept minimizes material use while providing flexible floor plates that can adapt to changing needs over time, helping to extend the building’s lifespan. Reuse was also a key design principle, with existing materials on site integrated into the structure of the public podium and the building façades.
The jury highlighted these qualities in its motivation:
“[…] The proposal has a strong concept regarding sustainability and recycling, with a convincing hybrid construction that minimizes material use and with an architecture that integrates recycled materials in both structure and facade in a diverse and innovative way […]”
This project is a joint effort by a consortium consisting of architects Andrén Fogelström and FELT, with structural engineering by Ney & Partners, sustainability by AU-RA, and landscape design by Outer Space Arkitekter.
