24.073 | Mobile bridge Werftquartier
-
In the context of transforming the Werftquartier from a former industrial site into a residential neighborhood, the city of Bremerhaven issued a competition for a new pedestrian, bike, and public transportation bridge linking the new neighborhood to the city center. The project had to address the preservation of quay walls and crane rails while reflecting the area’s historical identity in a contemporary way. From the south, the bridge extends the visual axes of the double slipway and frames the silhouette of Bremerhaven. From the north, the V-shaped geometry engages in a dialogue with the historic cranes. Viewed from the east and west, the bridge appears as a slender obelisk, offering guidance at the entrance to the new neighborhood and a prominent presence in the cityscape. A modern take on a Dutch Drawbridge, the design incorporates a V-shaped element that hydraulically rotates and lifts the bridge deck.
